.
“The classical approach to experimentation is to study one variable at a time: varying its level over a certain range, while holding all other variables constant, and observing the effect of the response variables.”

“This approach is not very good, however. For one thing, it is inefficient, requiring a separate set of observations for each variable and using each observation just once. It is also incapable of detecting interactions: variables acting together may have a greater or smaller effect than individual variables acting alone.”
.

“A complex adaptive system, cas, is an evolving, perpectually novel set of interacting agents where
.
• There is no universal competitor or optimum
• There is great diversity, as in a tropical forest, with many niches occupied by different kinds of agents
• Innovation is a regular feature – equilibrium is rare and temporary
• Anticipations change the course of the system.
.
.
.
E para onde é que nós caminhamos?
.
.
.
.
Deste postal “Resumo” recordo a figura:
.
.
.
E voltar a recordar as proposições do acetato de Holland:
.
• There is no universal competitor or optimum
• There is great diversity, as in a tropical forest, with many niches occupied by different kinds of agents
• Innovation is a regular feature – equilibrium is rare and temporary
• Anticipations change the course of the system.
.

Entretanto, ontem li "John Gray's The New Leviathans - is the world doomed to get worse?"e não pude deixar de pensar em Mongo e num postal sobre as ideias de Fukuyama, Mongo, tribos e política.

"They all have in their sights what Gray regards as a distinctively modern myth: the conviction that humanity is moving towards a common destination - a combination of liberal democracy, laissez-faire economics and scientific progress. Recent history - from the débâcle of nation-building in Iraq, through the global financial crisis to the sharpening of geopolitical tensions between the US and China - seems to encourage the conclusion that it will be later rather than sooner.

Central to most versions of liberalism, in Gray's sceptical view, is a faith in the "corrigibility and improvability of all social institutions and political arrangements". But it does not follow from this assault on liberal optimism that Gray believes social or political progress to be impossible. Rather, the hard lesson he wants readers to take from the new book is that it is always, and everywhere, precarious and provisional.

It is a fact of our natures that human beings have conflicting needs and demands; social peace "is a truce, partial and temporary, between humankind and itself." What political philosophers call the state of nature - in which, as the 17th-century English thinker Thomas Hobbes famously put it, life is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short" - is never far away.

...

He is much more convincing, however, when he suggests that wokeism is a "footnote to Christianity" [Moi ici: Algo que julgo Tom Holland também partilha] sustained by the belief that the world is perfectible. In fact, on Gray's account of the "psychology of the political believer", the same is true of liberalism itself, which, like all large-scale projects of human emancipation (including communism and socialism), is so much spilt religion."

Heresia - “Heresy” comes from the Greek verb hairein, which means to choose. The idea is, heresy is the result of choosing one thing that is true and then running with it until it distorts everything else.

.
Que acham? Acham que passa por aí?
.
Ou será dumping? Que acham? Acham que passa por aí?
.
O que faz um anónimo da província? Investiga!
.
E encontra facilmente isto de 2012, "Holland pig farmers leading the way in providing animal welfare":
"Holland is double the size of New Jersey, and there are about 6,500 pork producers in all. Swine herds average 320 sows, with 10,000 sows representing the largest (4,000-head maximum on one site), and they produce about 25 million pigs annually. Like U.S. pork producers, Dutch hog farmers face high feed prices and low margins. Their numbers are declining and herds are getting larger — to a point.
...
Producers that continue to raise hogs will get bigger. That’s what Have-Mellema and her husband have done with their operation in northern Holland. Having adopted pen gestation with straw bedding 12 years ago, they are expanding the sow herd from 320 head to 600.
.
The farmer has to learn to manage a new system. You have to build upon your knowledge and learn what works for your farm,” she says. “Management also is very important in a stall system.”"
.

"There is great diversity, as in a tropical forest, with many niches occupied by different kinds of agents"

.
Não há acasos! Todas as coincidências são significativas!!!
.
Pois bem, ao final da tarde dei de caras com alguns textos deste livro "Evolutionary Essays - A Thermodynamic Interpretation of the Evolution" de Sven E. Jørgensen.
.
.
"A complex adaptive system, CAS, is an evolving, perpectually novel set of interacting agents where
.
• There is no universal competitor or optimum
• There is great diversity, as in a tropical forest, with many niches occupied by different kinds of agents
• Innovation is a regular feature – equilibrium is rare and temporary
• Anticipations change the course of the system."
.
Há poucas horas, no Twitter, John Ortner escreveu:
.
"#complexity is movement toward a future that is under perpetual construction by the movment itself. Strategic meaning arises in the present!"; "#complexity theory advocates the relationship between emergence and self-organisation and how it can re-create a new reality" e "#complexity theory: self-organisation, rather than being marginal, must be the primal ground of all reality!".
.
.
.
"The more different species, the better is the possibility to build a larger, more effective and better organized ecological network. (Moi ici: O que contraria todas as abordagens top-down. Espanha! Espanha!" Precisamos de ecossistemas de agentes e de estratégias. A diversidade é fundamental. Uau!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ) It is therefore important, before the evolution of ecological networks is scrutinized, to examine how the diversity has evolved.
Tilman and his coworkers (Tilman and Downing, 1994) have shown that temperate grassland plots with more species have a greater resistance or buffer capacity (Moi ici: Remember Hamel & Valikangas) to the effect of drought. The resistance or buffer capacity could be expressed by the change in biomass between a drought year and a normal year. However, there is a limit—each additional plant contributed less. … Many experiments (Tilman and Downing, 1994) have also shown that higher biodiversity increases the biomass and therefore the eco-exergy, because by a higher biodiversity more ecological niches will inevitably exist and be utilized. There seems, in other words, to exist relationships between biodiversity and eco-exergy, between eco-exergy and resistance or buffer capacity and between biodiversity and buffer capacity. It is possible from fossil records to estimate the evolutionary increase of the biodiversity and the species richness or what we could call the horizontal evolution. The results of the estimations are presented in the following section.
Biodiversity may cover several diversity concepts as, for instance, the number of species, the number of families, the genetic diversity…”
.

"In fact, of 58 large companies that have announced Six Sigma programs, 91 percent have trailed the S&P 500 since, according to an analysis by Charles Holland of consulting firm Qualpro (which espouses a competing quality-improvement process).
One of the chief problems of Six Sigma, say Holland and other critics, is that it is narrowly designed to fix an existing process, allowing little room for new ideas or an entirely different approach. All that talent - all those best and brightest - were devoted to, say, driving defects down to 3.4 per million and not on coming up with new products or disruptive technologies."

Mongo is everywhere I look (parte II)

Continuado daqui.
.
.
"We have then been able to develop an evolutionary simulation model, in which a manufacturing firm attempts to incorporate successive new practices at some characteristic rate. There is an incredible range of possible structures that can emerge, however, depending simply on the order in which they are tried. But, each time a new practice is adopted within an organisation, it changes the “invadability” or “receptivity” of the organisation for any new innovations in the future. This is a true illustration of the “path dependent evolution” that characterises organizational change. Successful evolution is about the “discovery” or “creation” of highly synergetic structures of interacting practices.

The explorations/innovations that are tried out at a given time cannot be logically or rationally deduced because their overall effects cannot be known ahead of time. Therefore, the impossibility of prediction gives the system “choice.”

However, the actual success that a new practice meets with is predetermined by the “fitness landscape” resulting from the practices already present and what the emergent attributes and capabilities encounter in the marketplace.
.
But this landscape will be changed if a new practice does successfully invade the system. The new practice will bring with it its own set of pair interactions, modifying the selection criteria for further change. So, the pattern of what could then invade the system (if it were tried) has been changed by what has already invaded successfully. This is technically referred to as a “path dependent” process since the future evolutionary pathway is affected by that of the past.

It shows us that for a system of co-evolving agents with underlying microdiversity and idiosyncracy, we automatically obtain the emergence of structural attractors such as the organizational forms shown in Figure

What are the implications of these structural attractors?
.
Search carried out by the “exploratory” diffusion in character space leads to vastly increased performance of the final object. Instead of a homogeneous system, characterised by intense internal competition and low symbiosis, the development of the system leads to a much higher performance, and one that decreases internal competition and increases synergy. (Moi ici: Faz logo recordar Holland e os "complex adaptive systems":

There is no universal competitor or optimum
• There is great diversity, as in a tropical forest, with many niches occupied by different kinds of agents
• Innovation is a regular feature – equilibrium is rare and temporary
• Anticipations change the course of the system.
.
The whole process leads to the evolution of a complex, a “community” of agents whose activities, whatever they are, have effects that feed back positively on themselves and the others present. It is an emergent “team” or “community” in which positive interactions are greater than the negative ones.
.
The diversity, dimensionality and attribute space occupied by the final complex is much greater than the initial homogeneous starting structure of a single characteristic practice or behaviour. However, it is much less than the diversity, dimensionality and attribute spaces that all possible behaviours or practices would have brought to the system. The structural attractor therefore represents a reduced set of activities from all those possible in principle. It reflects the “discovery” of a subset of agents/practices whose attributes and dimensions have properties that provide positive feedback. This is different from a classical dynamic attractor that refers to the long-term trajectory traced by the given set of variables. Here, our structural attractor concerns the emergence of variables, dimensions and attribute sets that not only coexist but actually are synergetic."
.
This is so cool!!!
.

Apreciem as lições desta pequena história "How I Reinvented My Business".
.
.
"Like many fabled company founders, Curt Richardson launched his first business in his garage. He channeled his love of tinkering into a series of businesses that custom-manufactured plastics for automotive, medical, and industrial companies. But by the mid-1990s, Richardson had grown weary of having his fortunes tightly hitched to the financial returns of his clients. So, as he had done several times before, he went back to his garage to develop his own product line. "We wanted to take our destiny into our own hands," he says. ( Moi ici: Locus de controlo no interior)
Since water sports such as surfing and scuba diving were gaining in popularity, Richardson decided to create a product to target that market. In 1995, he developed the first prototype of a waterproof electronics case. His wife, Nancy, dubbed it the OtterBox, in reference to the animal's waterproof fur. Over the next couple of years, Richardson built up a modest revenue stream with the new product, and in 1998, he launched a separate company around the line.

That move turned out to be prescient. Although Richardson had anticipated a steady decline in his industry's fortune, the one-two punch of the dot-com crash and the 9/11 terrorist attacks severely hastened the fall. In 2002, he decided to outsource OtterBox's manufacturing in order to devote the company's resources to design and marketing. ( Moi ici: Onde podemos ser bons? Onde podemos fazer a diferença? Onde temos de nos concentrar? Onde está a alma do nosso negócio? Que experiências vamos alimentar?) "We were not in the hub of manufacturing, and it affected us finding talent," he says. "That definitely limited our scalability." The demise of many of his former competitors has since confirmed his decision; whereas once there had been hundreds of molding shops in Colorado, Richardson says, now there are only a few dozen.
.
OtterBox, conversely, has blossomed into a nearly $170 million business. Much of the company's success stems from its ability to pinpoint technology trends. In the beginning, though, OtterBox's business was far from the cutting edge. For the first few years of its existence, the company sold travel cases for cigar humidors in addition to its namesake waterproof cases. It wasn't until a retail customer asked if the company could make a case for PDAs that OtterBox got into mobile technology. When the iPod made its debut in the fall of 2001, the company quickly moved to develop a new line for the device, and its sales soon shot up.
.
Although OtterBox's fortunes are no longer tied to the health of domestic manufacturing, its success is dependent on another, notoriously fickle industry. But Richardson isn't worried. "If one device drops off, one will pick up," he says. "We don't really care who it is." Richardson's confidence in his company's success is particularly evident in his willingness to make bets on changing tides in the market. He decided, for instance, to produce accessories for tablets even when market observers were skeptical about whether the iPad would sell. And, last year, he made the move to stop selling OtterBox's line of iPod cases, which were still one of the company's top sellers, in favor of focusing on mobile accessories. ( Moi ici: Aplicação prática daquela máxima "Volume is vanity, Profit is sanity") "We looked at the market, and there was a lot of noise, a red ocean there," he says. "We knew fairly quickly we had made a good strategic move."
.
That said, plenty of market intelligence factors into OtterBox's decisions to develop or discontinue product lines. The company maintains strong relationships with mobile manufacturers, and it often receives information about new devices well in advance. Gente que não nos compra, gente que não prescreve mas gente que ganha em os seus potenciais clientes terem a vida facilitada e a experiência de uso mais enriquecida) Often, manufacturers' own investments offer valuable clues as to which products will be most successful. In addition to keeping close contact with those companies, OtterBox has made substantive investments in research and development over the past few years. This year, the company hired a director of R&D, and it has since expanded the department to 16 employees. )
.
In addition to its continuous investments in market prediction, the company is eyeing global expansion. OtterBox has regional offices in Cork, Ireland, for the European market and Hong Kong for the Asia-Pacific Rim market, as well as a small sales office in Dubai. The latter region has had particularly explosive growth, Richardson says. The company now has three sales representatives in Australia and plans to hire additional reps based in Singapore, Korea, and Taiwan. OtterBox's sales have also picked up significantly in the Middle East and Africa, particularly South Africa. "Globally, if we could see 3 percent of the market," Richardson says, "I would be ecstatic."
.
Ultimately, Richardson credits as much of the company's success to its internal processes as the products it ships out to the public. He places particular emphasis on consistently being prepared for change—a necessity given the rapidly changing consumer market. Richardson requires each department and account manager to submit a new plan every six to eight weeks in order to take stock of current trends and resources. ( Moi ici: A gente da moda talvez pudesse tirar daqui ideias para o target das 52 épocas por ano) ( Moi ici: And now... The Grand Finale!!!!!One area he doesn't focus on, however, is the competition. "I don't know what competitors are doing with their systems, prices, or infrastructure," he says. "To me, it doesn't really matter. We're our own worst enemy here."
.
Como não recordar John Holland:

  • There is no universal competitor or optimum
  • There is great diversity, as in a tropical forest, with many niches occupied by different kinds of agents
  • Innovation is a regular feature – equilibrium is rare and temporary
  • Anticipations change the course of the system.

Fish and Chips

“In truth, “Continentals” invented the dish (fish and chips). In the seventeenth century Sephardic Jews brought their pescado frito, fried fish, to Holland and England; carried east by Portuguese missionaries, the same dish would became Japanese tempura.
.
Jewish merchants in Soho were the first to combine chipped potatoes with fried fish, and it is generally agreed that one Joseph Malin opened the prototypical fish and chip shop in London’s Old Ford Road in the 1860.”

Uma descrição de Mongo

Este relatório da Accenture "From Retail to “Me-tail”: Tomorrow Starts Today" descreve o nosso planeta Mongo, descreve o universo de possibilidades, a explosão de variedade que encerra (recordar as árvores cladísticas da biologia).
.
.
Alguns recortes:
.
"In the future, the sheer diversity of both shoppers and shopping trips will require a multiplicity of formats, each tailored to a specific local market. The name of the store game will be precision retailing.
...
Some stores will focus on the timestarved, others on the “green” consumer. Some will simply be showrooms.
...
People who actually bother to visit a physical retail space will be in search of an enjoyable and entertaining “experience”.
...
In the future, Internet penetration ... into a global phenomenon. And this, of course, spells huge opportunities for start-ups, which we call “wildfire niches” because of the speed with which we expect them to spreadempowered by new technologies and serving a diversity of customer segments.
...
In the future, the lifecycle of products will be significantly shorter, making product innovation an even more critical differentiator of high performance. Não a China não vai ser a fábrica do mundo“Fast fashion”, in fact, will be the dominant business model — not just in apparel and consumer electronics, where it is already evident, but also in all other retail categories. Fast fashion will also necessitate more supple supply chains—a challenge for many. According to Miami-based Retail Systems Research, forecast does not match demand for most retailers. The proliferation of stock keeping units (SKUs) means that retailers are trying to edit a constantly increasing number of choices to stay relevant for the consumer.
...
In the future, the retail supply chain will be predicated on inventory arriving at the store shelf just as need arises. Replenishment orders will be placed and released on regular cycles—typically weekly or more. Lead times for domestic suppliers will be measured in hours or days. (Moi ici: Cadeias de fornecimento curtas, rápidas, flexíveis)
...
The benefits of a successful fast fashion business model are numerous. Customers will see a visible difference on the store floor, inducing them to make more visits and thus boosting revenues.
...
Production lead times should drop, thanks to the high utilization of common components. And vendor partnerships should strengthen.
...
Retail will also need to become a more collaborative industry. Individual retailers will recognize the value of greater specialization, particularly in logistics, and supply chain specialization and segmentation will be commonplace—though a proliferation of distribution points will also necessitate shared logistics and other forms of collaboration.
...
In the future, consumer demands will be so diverse and complex that no single organization will be able to cater to all of them. Mais uma vez, escolher clientes-alvo e proposta de valor casada com competências internas) Individual retailers will need to function more like agents. Consumers will look to them to “broker” products and channels. And that will spur many retailers to join together in strategic alliances, often with companies in other industries, most of which also want to “own” the consumer.

"When something is commoditized, an adjacent market becomes valuable"
.

.
"Many economic systems can be classified as complex adaptive systems. Such a system is complex in a special sense:

  • (i) It consists of a network of interacting agents (processes, elements);
  • (ii) it exhibits a dynamic, aggregate behavior that emerges from the individual activities of the agents; and
  • (iii) its aggregate behavior can be described without a detailed knowledge of the behavior of the individual agents.

An agent in such a system is adaptive if it satisfies an additional pair of criteria: the actions of the agent in its environment can be assigned a value (performance, utility, payoff, fitness, or the like); and the agent behaves so as to increase this value over time. A complex adaptive system, then, is a complex system containing adaptive agents, networked so that the environment of each adaptive agent includes other agents in the system.

(Moi ici: Segue-se agora a essência da coisa) Complex adaptive systems usually operate far from a global optimum or attractor. Such systems exhibit many levels of aggregation, organization, and interaction, each level having its own time scale characteristic behavior. Any given level can usually be described in terms of local niches that can be exploited by particular adaptations. The niches are various, so it is rare that any given agent can exploit all of them, as rare as finding a universal competitor in a tropical forest. (Moi ici: Nichos, nichos, diversidade, mais diversidade, fim das mega-empresas presentes com sucesso em todas as partes de um negócio) Moreover, niches are continually created by new adaptations. It is because of this ongoing evolution of the niches, and the perpetual novelty that results, that the system operates far from any global attractor.
.
The everexpanding range of technologies and products in an economy, or the everimproving strategies in a game like chess, provide familiar examples. Adaptive systems may settle down temporarily at a local optimum, where performance is good in a comparative sense, but they are usually uninteresting if they remain at that optimum for an extended period."

Autenticidade e empreendedorismo

Respeite a autenticidade.

"A small city-state devoid of resources but with a huge hinterland, like Hong Kong, may get rich in the same `natural' way as Venice and Holland did. Studying the inner mechanisms of such states, however, makes it clear that the principle of wealth creation - from the cost of a taxi licence in Hong Kong to the city's huge corporations - is not perfect competition, but rent seeking, that is, profiting from imperfect rather than from perfect competition."

Solidariedade intergeracional

"The older generation benefited from decades of rock-solid job protection, union-guaranteed salary increases and the promise of a comfortable retirement. All this has allowed them to weather Europe's longest postwar crisis reasonably well.
.
By contrast, many younger Europeans can hope for little more than poorly paid, short-term contracts that often open a lifelong earnings gap they may never close. Employers in many countries are reluctant to hire on permanent contracts because of rigid labor rules and sky-high payroll taxes that go to funding the huge pension bill of their parents.
.
The breach is widening: Median income for people over 60 rose between 2008 and 2012 in nearly every European Union country, according to Eurostat; it declined for people under 25 in almost half the EU countries, including in Spain, Portugal, the U.K. and Holland."
Trecho retirado de "In Europe, Job Protections for Older Generation Are Barriers for Younger Workers"

Em "Italian Prime Minister Renzi Struggles to Find Funds for Economic Plan", pode ler-se:
"If you exclude health care and pensions, reaching the savings targets becomes almost impossible,"

"“A complex adaptive system, CAS, is an evolving, perpectually novel set of interacting agents where:
  • There is no universal competitor or optimum
  • There is great diversity, as in a tropical forest, with many niches occupied by different kinds of agents
  • Innovation is a regular feature – equilibrium is rare and temporary
  • Anticipations change the course of the system."[Moi ici: Nem vale a pena sublinhar, senão teria de sublinhar tudo]
