"Kirk and his crew face down an unknown vessel from a group calling themselves the “First Federation.” Threats from the vessel escalate until it seems that the destruction of the Enterprise is imminent. Kirk asks Spock for options, who replies that the Enterprise has been playing a game of chess, and now there are no winning moves left. Kirk counters that they shouldn’t play chess – they should play poker. He then bluffs the ship by telling them that the Enterprise has a substance in its hull called “corbomite” which will reflect the energy of any weapon back against an attacker. This begins a series of actions that enables the Enterprise crew to establish peaceful relations with the First Federation....
"For all of its intricacies, chess is a game of defined rules that can be mathematically determined. It’s ultimately a game of boxes and limitations. A far better analogy to strategy is poker, not chess. Life is a game of probabilities, not defined rules. And often understanding your opponents is a much greater advantage than the cards you have in your hand."Se pensarem, por exemplo, nos textos de Daniel Amaral ou de Daniel Bessa... verão que são os de alguém que, seguindo as regras do jogo de xadrez, acaba sempre encurralado. E, por isso, não vê alternativas criativas.
"In Western Europe, Forrester expects a slightly faster 11 percent growth rate for online retail sales, going from $93 billion (68 billion Euros) in 2009 to $156 billion (114.5 billion Euros) in 2014. Forrester’s estimates exclude online sales of autos, travel, and prescription drugs."
"This, despite the fact that dairy farming has become shockingly more productive. When Bob was a kid, during the Depression, he and his 10 siblings milked the family’s 15 cows by hand and produced 350 pounds’ worth of milk per day. By the time Robert was a teenager, in the 1970s, the farm had grown to 90 cows — all of which were milked automatically through vacuum technology — and sold around 4,000 pounds of milk per day. Now the Fulpers own 135 cows, which produce more than 8,000 pounds of milk."E pensam que 135 cabeças é muito?
"Milk went from a local industry to a national one, and then it became international. The technological advances that made the Fulpers more productive also helped every other dairy farm too, which led to ever more intense competition."Depois, os comentários têm informações preciosas que ajudam a compor o cenário:
"I have cousins in the Albany area that are still in dairy, but their operation is enormous by our grandparents' standards. In both western NY (my current home), and northern NY, in Lewis County, the most successful dairy operations have at least 1000 head."
"One farm in Indiana has 30,000 cows, and is a tourist attraction, with its own off-ramp on the interstate."Interessante este comentário de um neo-zelandês, de um país sem subsídios mas que é um grande exportador agrícola e leiteiro:
"Speaking from the perspective of a New Zealander - When my father took over the family dairy farm 30 years ago he was milking 60 cows and making a living. My first job was working on a farm that milked 180 cows. Today you don't have a dairy farm unless you are milking 1000 cows and that is not a big herd.
"I'm lucky to have a great dairy nearby in Pittsford, NY, where they sell their own milk in glass bottles. I believe they make most of their revenue from their value-added products (e.g., ice cream), and the other food items they sell in their shop. Not so much from the milk, unfortunately (although it's of very high quality)."
"the rise of small farms is possible with sales direct to consumers (raw milk certification), direct processed either by working with small local cheesemakers or small yogurt facilities, or creating on farm processing, agritourism, and young farmer incentives."Qual é o argumento que nos dão, e que os jornalistas nem questionam, para explicar o leite muito barato que entra em Portugal? Fraca qualidade.
(Moi ici: É fundamental aumentar as exportações líquidas.
A parte sublinhada é caricata.
"It is widely believed that restructuring has boosted productivity by displacing low-skilled workers and creating jobs for the high skilled."Mas, e como isto é profundo:"In essence, creative destruction means that low productivity plants are displaced by high productivity plants."
