"Instead of focusing on continuously managing the denominator by cutting headcount, executives should identify ways to boost the numerator, and increase output."
"This era was dominated by three imperatives: that stores must look the same, that in-store service must be the same, and that bigger was better.
...
The disadvantage, of course, is that everything looks and feels the same, wherever you are, whatever the brand.
.
The approach is rapidly losing its pertinence: customers are moving on. The new middle classes, who were invited to share in these brands, now want to be surprised. They demand a newness and diversity that cannot be satisfied by uniform stores."
"the founder of the monster hotel chain, Conrad Hilton, that claimed "Each of our hotels is a little America." Eager to test that assertion, Eberhard booked a standard Hilton room in every city he visited, staying for only one night in each.
...
Otherwise, it's the same sterile environment repeated with every turn of the page.
...
With the rise of companies like Airbnb and the reach of social media, a universal style has seeped its way into cities worldwide—and it's a type of uniformity that extends beyond hotel walls.[Moi ici: ???] Preceding all of this was Hilton, repeating its design all over the world as it sprang up in city after city in the '60s, paving the way for this level of sameness and our ready acceptance of it."
"Corporations are the dominant mechanism by which economic activity is organized.
...
Over the past years, intelligent technologies, peer-to-peer cryptocurrencies and the Internet have laid the foundation for a very small size and a very low-cost enterprise with the potential for managing very large numbers of business relationships. [Moi ici: Every laptop is a corporation] The impact of these new actors is still hard to grasp because we are used to thinking about work from a different perspective.
.
Our thinking arises from a make-and-sell economic model. Most managers still subscribe to this and think that the core of creating value is to plan and manage a supply chain.
... In the mass-market economy, the focus was to create a quality product. With increased global competition that is not enough any more. The focus changes to a joint process of defining and solving contextual problems. You and your customer necessarily then become cooperators. [Moi ici: A aposta na interacção, na co-criação, a tal "shared identities"] You are together creating value in a way that both satisfies the customer and ensures a profit for you. New economic spaces beyond incumbent firms are emerging."
"we do not have any ready-made solutions. We do not believe in mass produced architecture. We believe in mass customization, making everything unique, not making everything the same. Of course, the idea of repetition has something to do with the mode of production we had at the beginning of the 20th century, with machines that would repetitively do the same job, so that you got standard, high-quality products — but it was the same from one to the other. It was just what the 20th century was about: mass production — and if you wanted to have something individualized, you could change the colour, or, say, the buttons. . Christos Passas: “We do not believe in mass produced architecture. We believe in mass customization, making everything unique, not making everything the same” Nowadays, I think, the mode of production is changing. It is very important, because the machines we are using today for fabrication, for construction, are so agile that they can produce unique objects in every case."
"“Small brewers have been growing in market share since the late ’70s and early ’80s, but for a long time they were too tiny to pose any threat to the bigger brands,” he says. “Only in the past 10 years have they really made themselves known, with more than 20 percent of the market in dollar sales.” By volume, their share also is going up, with craft beers representing 12.2 percent of the U.S. market in 2015, he says, and they will likely hit a peak this year. . Craft concoctions can do many things the big beers can’t, like offer greater variety, fuller flavor and snappier names (Pepperation H, Apocalypse Cow and Citra Ass Down) or humorous mottos appealing to locals and tourists, like Utah’s Polygamy Pale Ale (“Try one and you’ll want another, and another, and another...”). Watson says craft brewers also tend to be deeply involved with their communities and are highly philanthropic, bolstering brand loyalty in a way the monster beer makers cannot."
A necessidade de fugir do "granel instituído" e evoluir para práticas de gestão mais modernas: segmentação do mercado; diferenciação e especialização; actividade comercial proactiva;
A necessidade de apostar no marketing para relacionar preço com valor e não com custos; para diferenciar as empresas e ensinar os clientes a comprar;
.
O século XXI está noutro campeonato!
"Today’s corporate empires comprehend every corner of the earth. They battle their rivals with legions of highly trained managers. They keep local politicians in line with a promise of an investment here or a job as a consultant there.
...
Corporate profits more than tripled in 1980-2013, rising from 7.6% of global GDP to 10%, of which Western companies captured more than two-thirds. The after-tax profits of American firms are at their highest level as a share of national income since 1929.
... The golden age of the Western corporation, they argue, was the product of two benign developments: the globalisation of markets and, as a result, the reduction of costs.
... Now a more difficult era is beginning. More than twice as many multinationals are operating today as in 1990, making for more competition. Margins are being squeezed and the volatility of profits is growing. The average variance in returns to capital for North American firms is more than 60% higher today than it was in 1965-1980. MGI predicts that corporate profits may fall from 10% of global GDP to about 8% in a decade’s time.
.
Two things in particular are shaking up the comfortable world of the old imperial multinationals. The first is the rise of emerging-market competitors.
...
The second factor is the rise of high-tech companies in both the West and the East. These firms have acquired large numbers of customers in the blink of an eye.[Moi ici: O tal poder das plataformas da primeira geração]
... Such firms can also provide smaller companies with a low-cost launching pad that allows them to compete in the global market.
... The relative decline of the Western corporation could also lead to a rethinking of some of the long-standing assumptions about what makes for a successful business. Public companies may lose ground to other types of firm"

.
.
.
Local: Estádio do Riazor (A Coruña)
"To understand someone, you have to understand what the world looked like when they were twenty."
"The longer Twitter has existed, the more this essential fact has become clear. It will grow, but not spectacularly; make profits, but not spectacular ones. And it works
...
But to tech investors this is a bad thing. It means share prices calibrated for exponential growth cannot be justified. Any company that cannot demonstrate a clear route to monopolising its space, monetising its users’ data on a vast scale, is to be discarded, targeted for acquisition, consigned to perpetual dowdiness.
.
Nothing better illustrates our addiction to illogic than the mismatch between Twitter’s workability and its unpopularity with investors. And it’s a question with systemic importance."
.
"“It’s not an artisan cheese or anything that takes a lot of skill to make,” ... “You take a bunch of milk and fat and heat it and melt it all down,” he said. “It’s cheese. It’s made from milk. What’s the flavour profile for American cheese? There isn’t one . . . but that’s what Americans have come to know.” ... the big change since those days is that now even US consumers are turning away from such blander fare. This US food rebellion, on one level, reflects growing concerns, particularly among young people of the millennial generation, about the health consequences of eating products that are full of sugar, salt, fat and artificial preservatives and colouring."
"One thing that both waves have in common is the shift is away from the mass toward the individual. This suggests that the essential logic of mutation in our time involves providing individuals with the quality goods, services, experiences, and capabilities that they want, when they want them, how they want them, where they want them—and all at an affordable price. This reorientation around the individual necessarily implies trustworthy relationships. It implies a new kind of social contract based on a promise of advocacy and alignment with consumers’ genuine interests. As Schumpeter put it, “ the new consumer’s needs” are the disciplinary guideline."
.
Lembrei-me logo de ter lido este texto durante a viagem de comboio, "Cadbury, Kellogg’s and Kingsmill feel the pain of supermarket price war".
.
"3-D printing is starting to do something amazing. The technology is transforming physical stuff into data, much the way digital technology over the past 20 years changed things like newspapers and phone calls into data.
.
Once anything turns into data, it becomes cheap and easy to send anywhere over networks, and cheap and easy for anyone to manipulate using software. So imagine a world where physical stuff - chairs, shoes, sex toys, Jeeps - can be sent around the world instantly and at almost zero cost. And imagine a world where the design of those chairs, shoes, sex toys or Jeeps could be altered and customized by any suburban mom on her iPad while fighting boredom at her kid’s soccer game.
...
Another effect of turning stuff into data will be mass customization. You may never again have to own anything that looks like anybody else’s.
...
Because the products are data, they don’t have to be static. The designers can constantly tweak them in response to customer input. “It’s iterative—I’ve seen some products go through 30 versions in a couple of months
...
“Everybody’s empowered to solve their own problems,” he says.
.
Industrial-scale 3D printing will get increasingly sophisticated, rendering one physical thing after another into data that can be sent anywhere, modified by anyone, and printed and assembled locally. In another decade, shoes, chairs, bicycles or who knows what else will become data.
...
There’s an industrial side to this, too. This process is going to open up physical-product industries the way the Internet and blogs opened up the business of news. O mundo do cidadão jornalista.
