"Volume is Vanity, Profit is Sanity"
"A 1975 study conducted at the Harvard Business School using the PIMS (which originally stood for Profit Impact of Market Share) database of historical market performance of leading global companies had reported a strong, consistently positive, correlation between a company's market share and its relative profitability within an industry. In the Harvard Business Review, the authors proposed multiple plausible reasons why a larger market share could enable a company to operate more profitably. That led to an explosion of literature by marketing theorists and leading consultancies advocating aggressively low pricing as an "investment" in growth that would eventually create "cash cows" - exceptionally profitable revenue streams requiring little investment to maintain them.Unfortunately, companies that adopted this approach to pricing more often than not found the theory, and the eventual profitability it promised, lacking. As the PIMS database grew, more nuanced relationships were revealed. Although a cross-sectional correlation between market share and profitability proved durable, the better predictor of financial success is determined by how a company invested to grow. Most importantly, it was shown that profitable companies are better able to invest in growth opportunities and subsequently enjoy long-term success. Reflecting this more accurate analysis, the PIMS organization cleverly redefined their acronym to stand for Profit Impact of Marketing Strategy.Research by Deloitte Consulting LLP has brought further clarity to the relationship between growth and profitability. Deloitte compiled a time-series dataset of 394 companies, covering the period from 1970 to 2013 with exceptional, mediocre and poor performers matched by industry. The researchers defined "exceptional performance" as a company achieving superior profitability (return on assets), stock value, and revenue growth for more than a decade and sought to understand how a small minority of firms manage to achieve it. Their conclusion:...a [near term] focus on profitability, rather than revenue growth or [stock] value creation, offers a surer path to enduring exceptional performance...-So how do marketing and financial managers at exceptional companies achieve sustainable exceptional profitability? It is not the result of slashing overhead more ruthlessly than their competitors. In fact, Deloitte's data indicates that exceptional performers tend to spend a bit more than competitors (as a percent of sales) on R&D and SG&A. Their exceptional profitability and, eventually, exceptional stock valuations are built on higher margins per sale that fund initiatives to grow future revenues.Unfortunately, many companies fail to understand that making sales profitably should be the first priority not an afterthought to a growth strategy."
Nike said in late June it would roll out sub $100 sneakers around the world.
"The first growth priority should be to gain share in your market — regardless of how fast it is growing. And the share I care most about is $ share, not unit share. Apple has only 20% share of smartphone units but over 50% of revenue share. The latter is its real share!"

“Until you make your unconscious choices conscious, they will direct your life, and you will call it fate.”

"Japanese carmakers are alarmed by the rapid development of Chinese electric vehicles and risk becoming "followers" if they do not innovate more quickly, the head of Sony-Honda's joint venture has warned.Yasuhide Mizuno said Japan's companies needed to change their conservative corporate culture and called for a breakthrough in manufacturing to keep up with Chinese rivals, which within a few years have become some of the world's leading vehicle exporters."Chinese competitors are very strong, and I'm very scared of their implementation and execution speed," saidMizuno, chief executive of Sony Honda Mobility, at the company's headquarters in Tokyo. "Japanese carmakers are a bit nervous or sensitive before launching a car. We need to change this kind of behaviour, otherwise China will be first and we will always be followers," added Mizuno, who led Honda's China operations until 2020....Mizuno added that Japanese carmakers should not be complacent after the US quadrupled tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to 100 per cent, in effect shutting out groups such as BYD and Nio from the market."

Agora no FT apanho:
"Champagne is more closely associated with celebration than wine.
But Pernod Ricard boss Alexandre Ricard would be justified in cracking open a celebratory bottle of red, after the French drinks group's deal to sell most of its wine business, including the Jacob's Creek and Campo Viejo brands. It is a wise move: global wine consumption continues to ebb.
Pernod is selling its wine assets in Australia, New Zealand and Spain representing annual production of 90mn litres - to a consortium of investors led by Bain Capital. The same group this year took over Australian wine producer Accolade Wines, owner of Hardys.
...
Global wine consumption has been in decline since it peaked at about 25bn litres in 2007. Last year that fell to an estimated 22.1bn litres, according to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine.
In recent years, wine prices have risen as producers passed on higher costs. But alcohol consumption is also dropping as consumers become more health-conscious.
The result is that global wine production in 2023 was 7 per cent higher than consumption. Volume should decline by an average 1 per cent a year out to 2028, according to drinks research group IWSR. And no growth is expected from rising prices either - even if parts of the market, such as rose, are more resilient."

"As Western companies quake at the latest onslaught of cheap Chinese -goods, a similar drama is playing out in China, where manufacturers are struggling as Beijing boosts industrial capacity without stimulating new demand.
Consider Jiangsu Lopal Tech, a company that supplies lithium iron phosphate to make batteries. The company lost $169 million in 2023, wiping out nearly three years of profit, according to its most recent annual statement. It blamed the red ink on overcapacity in China's lithium iron phosphate market and a slowdown in demand from domestic battery makers.
A similarly plaintive song is heard throughout China's corporate landscape. Rampant overcapacity combined with weak consumer demand is pushing many Chinese companies to the brink, forcing them to slash prices and crushing profits.
With the property bubble that powered growth for years deflating, Beijing has been funneling investment into manufacturing, yet taking few significant steps to boost consumption that would soak up the resulting supply-mainly because Chinese leader Xi Jinping sees U.S.-style consumption as wasteful and contrary to his goal of making China an industrial and technological powerhouse.
...
The resulting overcapacity means that prices that producers charge at the factory gate have been in free fall for almost two years. That is dragging the overall economy closer to outright deflation, and eating into earnings. Around a quarter of the companies listed in mainland China are now unprofitable, compared with 7% a decade ago, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of listed companies' financial statements."...Overcapacity in China eventually leads to default and insolvency, just as in the U.S. The difference is that in China, the state plays a lead role in deciding which companies survive and which fail. In the past, when losses mounted in bloated sectors such as steel and solar, China has withdrawn subsidies, ordered companies to cut capacity, and merged a multitude of minor players into a smaller group of bigger, more competitive firms able to turn a profit."

"Bird in Hand Principle – Start with your means - Entrepreneurs start with what they have"

"But that is just the economically rational side of the issue — where the proverbial curves cross. I guess I once naïvely thought that the price was set by how much purchasers wanted and valued the good for themselves. But the accelerator on that is the purchasers' recognition that to a segment of society important to them, it is meaningful that the good in question is ownable by them and not by somebody else. That is, ownership of the good positions the purchaser favorably with a segment of society that matters to the purchaser....Understanding customer value has always been and will always be tricky. We used to be told it was all rational and functional. Then behavioral economics came along and demonstrated that there are many emotional elements involved that go well beyond the traditional functional definitions. And now it is clear that value is clearly socially constructed.
So, when you think about your customers, make sure to consider all the elements of value not just functional value and not just emotional value within the customers themselves. Over and above that, ask to what segment of society does possession of your good helps them to be a member. That final piece may be much more important than you may think at first blush."

"At the higher levels, economics is a complex subject involving a deep understanding of equations and maths. At a basic level, however, it is pretty simple. Resources are scarce. Prices are signals. Incentives matter. Markets are efficient, and supply and demand always find a way of matching in the end - even if it involves some painful adjustments along the way. Those are the fundamental lessons drilled into students on any introductory course....Such as? Let's start with a few obvious examples. In the legislation set out in the King's Speech this week, the Government said it plans to equalise the minimum wage for young and older staff. Sounds fair, right? After all, why should a teenager not be paid the same as a 40-year-old colleague doing the same job? The problem is, if you were running a warehouse would you rather hire a forklift truck operator with 20 years of experience, or someone who left school last week, if the wages are the same? That's right. You would prefer the guy with experience. Young people will find it very hard to get that crucial first job. Prices matter, as it turns out, and that includes the price of labour....Everybody just games the system. In one famous example, hospital managers in Moscow met their target to reduce the numbers of old people dying in their beds by kicking them all out into the streets in the middle of the Russian winter. Sure, they all died, but the target was met. If we really wanted to build more houses, we would liberalise the planning rules so it is easier and more profitable. Because, hey, incentives work. But it seems no one in the Starmer administration is aware of that."
"Farm workers coming to the UK are at risk of debt bondage because they often borrow money to cover flights and visas without knowing what they will earn, a report by the Migration Advisory Committee found."
- "The food sector should cover upfront costs faced by migrant farm workers if it wants to keep access to the overseas labour it relies on, the government's advisers on migration have said."- "But workers also need more certainty over how much they will earn, the committee added, calling for a guarantee of at least two months pay, to ensure they could recoup the costs of coming to the UK."- "It urged the industry to accelerate action to move to an 'employer pays principle', so that recruitment and relocation expenses are borne by employers rather than workers."
- "To maintain current levels of food production, there was no immediate alternative given a lack of willing UK recruits to the seasonal worker scheme (SWS), the report published yesterday said, urging ministers to give industry certainty over the scheme's future."- "The SWS allows UK growers to hire around 45,000 people a year on six-month visas. The previous Conservative government said in May that the programme would run at least until 2029 but noted the aim would be to taper its size over time, while encouraging farmers towards automation."- "Labour pledged before the general election on July 4 to reform the immigration system with a view to reducing overseas hiring, by making employers' access to visas conditional on greater efforts to train UK workers."
- "An industry task force, including supermarkets, growers and recruiters, has said it will model ways an EPP model could work. But it has made slow progress because there is no consensus on how to share costs along the supply chain, given the tight margins imposed by retailers on UK growers."- "The MAC said the task force needed to work faster and urged it to set a timeframe to present proposals. Ministers should then confirm the scheme's continuation only if this timeframe was met, it said."
"Indian-Americans have achieved a breathtaking amount in this country in a couple of generations. What's impressive is both the range of their success and that they have succeeded entirely on their own steam. No ethnic or racial favors have come their way from schools, colleges or government. At least until the recent Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action, it was a disadvantage to be an Indian student applying to an Ivy League school.
...
I'm an ethnic Indian immigrant to the U.S., in the process of becoming an American, but I don't write this to be self-congratulatory. Instead, I do so to point out that contrary to claims of "systemic racism" and pervasive "white privilege," America has been a place where this ethnic minority has blossomed. Indians constitute just under 1.5% of the country's population, and yet we've had two IndianAmericans (Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy) compete for the Republican presidential nomination this year. Vice President Kamala Harris, lest we forget, was born to an Indian mother. Indian-American CEOs run Google and Microsoft as well as Novartis, Starbucks, FedEx, Adobe and IBM.
...
What Indians don't specialize in is grievance. There is no Indian lobby pushing for increased "representation" in this or that economic or political sector, no pressure group ululating for ethnic enclaves, or for information to be provided in a language other than English. You won't be told, when you call your bank, to "press 2 for Telugu." You won't have Indian parents at American public schools clamoring for special dispensations for their children. There is, instead, a quiet determination among Indian-Americans to take full advantage of being in a land that gives them a range of opportunities unavailable in their country of ancestral origin.
It is deeply unfashionable to speak these days of the American Dream. To do so marks you out, in certain circles, as anachronistic or sentimental. But if there's one group that holds fast to its belief in the American Dream, it's Indian-Americans. Unapologetic about their drive to thrive, they are rightly scornful of those who would say that America is a place that thwarts people on the basis of race."

Primeiro a frase completa:
