Lições islandesas

Ricardo Arroja fez um interessante recorte do IHT acerca da Islândia.

Várias lições podem ser retiradas:

"If Icelanders are truly interested in getting back to what they have always done best, that means getting back to fishing." (Moi ici: O mesmo que devem fazer as empresas quando a coisa está preta, interrogarem-se sobre onde podem ser boas, questionarem-se sobre onde são melhores, onde fazem ou podem fazer a diferença)

"No one knows that better than Armann Kr. Olafsson (...) Uncertain about his future, he accompanied his brother, the owner of a successfull fish farm, on a trip to Boston to attend the annual seafood convention there. (Moi ici: As nossas empresas deviam fazer mais disto, networking, procurar novidades, levantar a cabeça da secretária, tirar a cabeça de dentro do reactor, get ou of the building, estar atento às novidades, procurar activamente novidades) At the convention, an American asked Mr. Olafsson and his brother if they knew how to get hold of some fois gras de la mer. The brothers inquired what that was. Monkfish liver, the American explained, adding it was now a hot item at high-end sushi restaurants. "Our faces were just big question marks", Mr. Olafsson recalled. "In Iceland, we usually threw this liver out". Not anymore. Almost overnight, Mr. Olafsson became Iceland's leading exporter of fois gras de la mer.

When monkfish eason came to an end, he found another niche to capitalize on: codfish milt, or sperm. Mr. Olafsson discovered, after doing a bit of research, that milt was in demand in a number of upscale restaurants in the United States, Japan and Korea. One morning I accompanied Mr. Olafsson to the plant where he obtains his milt (...) "What's in those vats?", I asked uneasily. "That's the product", he replied proudly. He then scooped up a huge handful of milt. "This is the sperm. It has a lot of protein, just like your sperm." I marveled for a moment that what he was holding was a marketable commodity. But would he really eat the stuff? "You know", he replied, "in Iceland we eat ram's testicles, so believe me, it's no big deal to eat cod sperm"." As tendências não são mandamentos

"Portugal é o País que menos vai crescer até 2016" este título denota uma tendência... assumindo que tudo o resto se mantém constante a tendência desenrolar-se-à segundo a previsão.

"Intervenção externa é 120 vezes as de 1977 e 83 juntas" este título revela o quanto o nosso Estado cresceu desmesuradamente sem controlo, uma espécie de cancro que tem de ser extirpado. Se, um grande se, se for extirpado será que a tendência vai-se manter?

"Comércio externo cresce ao maior ritmo desde 1996" onde se pode ter uma percepção do estado actual de cerca de 30% da nossa economia:

"As exportações nacionais cresceram nos dois primeiros meses do ano, por exemplo, 20% face a igual período de 2010. Mais: contando só com o mês de Fevereiro, as exportações cresceram 21,1% em termos homólogos, o maior ritmo desde 1996."

Consegue imaginar, se só ouve as notícias dos media sobre a crise, o FMI e o défice, o que é viver e trabalhar em ilhas que estão a crescer de 10 a 20% em cima de um ano anterior que já foi bom?

Claro que os cucos querem vampirizar estas ilhas:

""Se mantivéssemos este ritmo já não entravamos em recessão", disse Basílio Horta, presidente da AICEP. "Se chegássemos ao fim do ano com um crescimento de 12%, seria possível um crescimento modesto mas que não fosse negativo", frisou, durante um encontro com empresários."

Esmagar 30% da economia para que suporte os restantes 70% é uma loucura que não permite libertar capital para alimentar ainda mais crescimento virtuoso.

"Why Trends Are For Suckers" alimenta-me a esperança de que algo pode vir a mudar para alterar aquela tendência lá em cima... é tão claro... só o preconceito ideológico e o corporativismo da maioria eleitoral dos cucos não quer ver... talvez a intervenção do FMI, não sujeita a votos, permita fazer a mudança que se impõe.

Quem elogia o percurso da economia islandesa, porque deverá já estar a crescer em 2012, fazia bem em perceber sobre o que foi preciso acontecer primeiro em 2010 e 2011 ao PIB e ao desemprego.

"Espanha. Espanha. Espanha!"

Qual era a prioridade?

Ando a ler alguns capítulos de um livro de 2002, "Strategy is Destiny" de Robert Burgelman.
.
O primeiro capítulo, como o mesmo título do livro, é muito interessante. O autor aborda um tema que me acompanha e preocupa durante as minhas intervenções nas empresas: Como conciliar o lógico, o racional, o planeado, o estudado, com as oportunidades em que uma empresa pode tropeçar?
.
"Strategy is destiny is the theme of this book. Destiny is an archaic idea of a fixed and inevitable future. Strategy, in contrast, is a modern idea, of an open-ended future to be determined by it. In reality the two ideas exist in perpetual tension. Successful and unsuccessful strategies shape a company's destiny. But if strategy shapes destiny, destiny has ways of asserting itself and constraining strategy. New sources of strategy create the possibility of future destiny, and help the company evolve."

"Each company is an ecology within which strategic initiatives emerge in patterned ways. Top management drives most initiatives but leaders througout the organization also drive initiatives. These initiatives compete for limited organizational resources to increase their relative importance."

Depois o autor apresenta o que apelida de "Induced Strategic Action", o conjunto de acções que decorrem e executam a estratégia definida pela gestão de topo, algo a que na minha nomenclatura chamo de "somatório da aplicação das iniciativas estratégicas"

Se um país fosse gerido por um governo como uma grande empresa, o Grande Planeador definiria o rumo e proclamaria "Espanha. Espanha. Espanha!" e toda a economia começaria, ou reforçaria a sua ligação a Espanha.

Felizmente um país não é uma grande empresa e ainda vai havendo suficiente autonomia para diferentes actores porem em prática estratégias alternativas. Algo a que Burgelman, ao estudar a Intel, chamou de "Autonomous Strategic Action".

"Autonomous strategic action involves initiatives of individuals or small groups that are outside the scope of the corporate strategy at the time that they come about."

"The induced strategy process is variation reducing. The autonomous strategy process is variation increasing."

Ainda bem que grande parte da economia não abraçou aquelas palavras "Espanha. Espanha. Espanha!" por que ou me engano muito ou Espanha vai ser um estouro ainda maior que o nosso.

My feeling is that the Spain of Zapatero looks more and more like the Hungary of Gyurcsany with every passing day, and I say this more from the point of view of the twin deficit problem, and the impression the administration gives of things being totally out of control and no one knowing what to do, than anything else")

A implosão de um país?

Até parece retirado de um enredo de um filme-apocalipse: "Iceland Running Out of Food"

The currency is now trading at 40 per cent of its January values; the last seven days alone have seen a plummet of over 11 per cent and major international institutions have stopped trading in the currency altogether.

The Icelandic stock exchange, down 80 per cent, is in free fall and money market funds, once a safe haven for savers, are imposing write-downs in anticipation of further corporate failure.Homeowners are confronted with negative equity, and businesses with no new credit lines. For an island population of 300,000 that relies on imported goods, the prospects of rampant inflation - already running at 15 per cent - deep recession and systemic failure loom."

E se isto parece mau, que dizer disto:

I guess the rumours I was hearing from my relatives have some truth to them. Oil will run out next.
