So Krugman's... (parte II)

Continuado daqui.
.
.
"Although job growth receives enormous attention in economic policy discussions, this attention is sometimes misplaced. Indeed, the mere creation of jobs is not, by itself, an appropriate economic policy objective. Instead, policy is appropriately directed toward wealth creation and the expansion of consumption opportunities."
...
"The focus on job growth as a policy objective probably stems from a perceived link between high (or rising) employment and high (or rising) real income. Real income, in turn, is seen as closely linked to consumption opportunities and, hence, economic well-being."
...
"... the experience of the 1980s belies the belief in a tight chain of causation running from employment to real income to consumption and economic well-being. In short, high employment and rapid job growth are very imperfect indicators of economic welfare, so they should not be treated as ultimate policy objectives or the primary yardsticks of policy evaluation."
