"While the origins of individual wildfires are not always clear, in the U.S., utilities are known to have caused 2.4 percent of the blazes between 2010 and 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Other sources say it's closer to 10 percent. In California, the state auditor found that power companies were responsible for 19 percent of acreage burned from 2016 to 2020. Most often, the culprit is vegetation. It's widely agreed that a key driver of the increasing number of wildfires is higher temperatures that suck moisture from ecosystems, sometimes alternating in a whiplash of extreme wet weather that causes vegetation to overgrow, ready to catch on a falling spark."
