Há aquela cena retirada de um dos filmes da saga Star Wars:

Foi dela que me lembrei ao ler no Telegraph de ontem:

É assim que o declínio se instala nas democracias modernas: não apenas por imposição, mas por aclamação. Na corrida ao poder, promete-se tudo, adia-se a factura e corrói-se a base económica que sustenta a liberdade e o nível de vida. O aplauso vem primeiro. O preço vem depois. E, nessa altura, costuma ser tarde.
