Os políticos às Segundas, Terças e Quartas estão com a Greta, às Quintas, Sextas e Sábados: "Politicians are lining up to propose help for families as prices rise."
"I disagree. There must be no energy bailout. Politicians should tell voters to wrap up warmer, turn down the thermostat, cancel their Sky subscription, whatever. The state cannot keep socialising the entire cost of macroeconomic shocks, geopolitical turbulence, pathogens, and the rest.
Why? Because when you fund all this "compassion" by increasing debt - which is all governments have offered for two decades and all this welfare-addicted Labour administration is offering today - the consequences are higher interest payments, higher risk premiums and more bloated liabilities, such that if World War III happens, we are likely to face not just the missiles of Putin but an instant sovereign debt crisis.
This isn't compassion; it's national lunacy....So let me transport you to a saner era. The 1973 energy shock was far more savage than this one is likely to be. Oil prices quadrupled. Inflation spiked. West Germany had a left-wing government led by Willy Brandt. Did he reach for a vast bailout? Did he flaunt fake compassion? No, he resisted the temptation because he knew it would leave the nation more vulnerable - and shaft the poorest most of all. "We'll have to get dressed a little more warmly this winter and maybe the next two or three winters, he said. "But we aren't going to starve"That is not cruelty. It's not uncompassionate. No, it's something else. Leadership."
Não acrescento nem tiro. A melhor solução para os preços altos são os preços altos.
