"Around 80 Labour MPs are said to oppose the government's planned £6bn in welfare cuts, the details of which will be announced in the Spring Statement on 26 March.Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves have "little choice" , says Ross Clark in The Spectator.Reeves' "fiscal headroom" has vanished and she already hiked taxes aggressively in her October Budget. Starmer has promised to raise defence spending to 2.5% of GDP.The case for welfare cuts is "pretty clear": 9.3 million people of working age are classed as economically inactive, 2.8 million through illness. The Office for Budget Responsibility estimates that the total benefits bill will rise by more than 25% to £378bn by 2030, of which £100.7bn (more than the defence budget) will go on incapacity and disability benefits."
