"to figure out what is possible"

"The key to preparing for what happens next is to figure out what is possible, and then what is likely, based on what is happening now. Even if specific futures can’t be seen, many of the underlying forces that will determine them are obvious and reliable. One of the most reliable is entropy, or disorder: all systems in the universe are in the process of decay. Sometimes the disorder accelerates abruptly, as happened to social and economic systems in the wake of Covid-19. Sometimes it moves slowly, like the death of a star over millions of years. But the natural progress of any closed system is toward greater disorder. That’s the second law of thermodynamics."
