-
"Honesty the best policy for UK’s chancellor" no Financial Times de 7 de Março.
-
"Mr Darling has no option but to downgrade his forecasts for the economy. Apart from a flat housing market, there is little evidence yet of the global credit squeeze depressing the economy, but everyone expects a sharp slowdown. The public finance position is worse. With little spare capacity in the economy and a nascent inflation problem, Britain’s government should not be borrowing 3 per cent of national income, a figure that has stubbornly refused to come down, despite the economic good times of recent years."
...
"First, he should do everything possible to build a reputation for solidity and prudence on the economy. The credit squeeze was certainly not his fault, nor is the state of the public finances, but he will begin to take the blame if he has to come back to parliament every year with fresh excuses for why things are worse than he set out a year previously.
-
A radical revamping of the government’s economic forecasting techniques is needed, replacing boasts about the government’s record with the acknowledgment of uncertainty and consequent contingency planning.
-
It might be harder to explain such a forecast, based on admittedly subjective probabilities, but at least it would be an honest reflection of what people know and do not know
."
...

"If he tells the truth about the economic constraints, emphasises fairness in the tax and benefit system and moves towards simplicity in taxation, Mr Darling will have a chance to set himself on the path towards becoming a reforming and prudent chancellor. He should take the opportunity – then there would be no need to pity him after all."
